DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS WORKING PAPER SERIES Firm Heterogeneity, Trade, and Wage Inequality
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper considers a world of two symmetric countries with two factors and two sectors. Outputs of the two sectors are imperfect substitutes and sectors differ in relative factor intensity. Each sector contains a continuum of heterogenous firms that produce differentiated goods within their sector. Trade is costly and there are both variable and fixed costs of exporting. The paper shows that under some plausible conditions supported by the data, trade between similar countries can increase the demand for skilled labor, which in turn increases the wage inequality between skilled and unskilled labor. The quantitative analyses suggest that such trade effects can explain up to 12 percent of the increase in the US skill premium. JEL Classification: F12, F13, and L1

Nber Working Paper Series Workplace Heterogeneity and the Rise of West German Wage Inequality
We study the role of establishment-specific wage premiums in generating recent increases in West German wage inequality. Models with additive fixed effects for workers and establishments are fit in four distinct time intervals spanning the period 1985-2009. Unlike standard wage models, specifications with both worker and plant-level heterogeneity components can explain the vast majority of the ...
متن کاملNber Working Paper Series the Empirics of Firm Heterogeneity and International Trade
This paper reviews the empirical evidence on firm heterogeneity in international trade. A first wave of empirical findings from micro data on plants and firms proposed challenges for existing models of international trade and inspired the development of new theories emphasizing firm heterogeneity. Subsequent empirical research has examined additional predictions of these theories and explored o...
متن کاملNber Working Paper Series a Theory of Aggregate Supply and Aggregate Demand as Functions of Market Tightness with Prices as Parameters
This paper presents a parsimonious equilibrium business cycle model with trade frictions in the product and labor markets. The model features unemployment and unsold production and its general equilibrium can be represented very simply: as the intersection of an aggregate supply and an aggregate demand, with product market tightness acting as a price. The aggregate supply represents the expecte...
متن کاملWage Mobility within and between Jobs
This paper presents evidence on the extent of wage mobility both while working for the same firm and when moving to a new firm. We find that mean wage growth between jobs is large in comparison to wage growth while working for the same employer, especially for less educated workers who experience low mean wage growth between jobs but even lower wage growth while working for the same employer. T...
متن کاملDEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS WORKING PAPER SERIES Technology Diffusion through Trade with Heterogeneous Firms
I investigate the long-run implications of trade and technology diffusion through trade, when firms are heterogeneous and trade is costly. The paper integrates firm heterogeneity and trade into product innovation growth models from endogenous growth theory. Two specifications of the R&D process are considered. In the first, R&D uses labor and intermediate goods; in the second, it uses labor and...
